GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 20th. June, 1913.

I notice from the Press that a movement is on

foot to ask His Majesty's Government to permit a certain amount of

the Boxer Indemnity to be assigned to the proposed British Universi-

-ty for Central China.

If this proposal should fructify may I sugest

that some part of the indemnity be devoted to the endowment of the Hongkong University which is more likely to advance British

interests in China than a University which, as I am informed, pro-

-poses to conduct its teaching in the Chinese language.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Alling

Governor,&c..

HE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LEVIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
